History

Marks the 'Cape Horn of the Pacific' — the dramatic turn where the California coast shifts from north-south to east-west. Strategically critical for Pacific navigation. Original 1856 lighthouse replaced by current 1882 structure. Site of the 1923 Honda Point Disaster (9 destroyers wrecked nearby).

Why it matters

Geographically and historically one of the most significant lighthouse sites on the Pacific Coast. The 'corner' of California. Not publicly accessible, which makes it a compelling inclusion — the unreachable lighthouse.

The visit

NOT accessible to the public. The lighthouse can be seen from the ocean. The Dangermond Preserve does not allow public access. Do not attempt to access via hiking trails — the preserve explicitly prohibits this.

Accessibility

The lighthouse is on USCG property within the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve (The Nature Conservancy). The preserve is explicitly NOT open to the public. Hiking trail apps that suggest access are incorrect per Dangermond Preserve.

Flagship 12 inclusion justified by extreme historical and geographic significance despite no public access. Noted as 'the one you can't reach' — adds dramatic tension to the circuit narrative.
