History

Built 1901; current structure 1934. The point sits on what is now Vandenberg Space Force Base. Best known for the 1923 Honda Point Disaster, in which seven U.S. Navy destroyers ran aground on the rocks below, killing 23 sailors — still the worst peacetime loss of U.S. Navy ships.

Why it matters

The geography matters here more than the architecture. This stretch of coast earned the name 'Devil's Jaw' for a reason, and the 1923 disaster is the reason Coast Guard navigation training in California changed.

The visit

No public access — the entire site is inside an active military installation. Visible at a distance from the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner as it skirts the coast. Vandenberg occasionally opens grounds for limited tours; check current programs.
