History

Built 1856. One of the original California lighthouses. Survived the 1964 Good Friday tsunami — the keeper and family sheltered inside as waves swept over the island. Tidal island setting is unique in California. Museum inside the lighthouse.

Why it matters

The tsunami survival story is one of the most dramatic in California lighthouse history. The tidal island setting — walk across at low tide, stranded at high tide — is unlike any other California lighthouse experience. The museum inside the original keeper's dwelling is excellent.

The visit

Check tide chart before visiting. Walk across to island at low tide. Museum inside lighthouse. Brief guided tour included with entry. April–September open daily; October–March weekends only. Monthly schedule posted at parking area.

Recent log entries

Jul 8, 2025·K.R., Eureka

Tide tables said the window opened at 10:42am. We were there at 10:15 and the causeway was still ankle-deep. Watched a sea lion haul out on the rocks while we waited. Lighthouse keeper Donna gave us the tour at 11:15 sharp. She didn't rush a single question. Bring a windbreaker even in July — Crescent City wind doesn't care what month it is. The lens itself is fourth-order Fresnel and gorgeous in person.

Tip · Cash for the donation. Card not accepted at the door as of July 2025.

tidewindTide window was about 30 minutes shorter than the published table. Always verify the day of with the Del Norte historical society.
